(JPS) Speedsters Make You Smile
Last weekend, John and I exhibited at an incredible event here in Southern California, La Jolla Concours D’Elegance. On display were virtually priceless cars from 1918 to 2018, from Fords to Bugattis and everything in between, and just outside the main lawn area people stopped and stared at two little cars on display from JPS Motorsports.
John and I stood in the blazing Southern California sun from 8am to 4pm, and since it was my first ever “show” as a member of the JPS Motorsports team, it was especially memorable. We chose to present two Custom Speedsters. Both Subaru-powered, they attracted tremendous attention. Not because their engine compartments contained an incongruous yet super cool chrome plated Subaru flat-four, but because they looked so sorted, so clean that peoples’ natural assumption was that they were originals.
Despite the fact that we were flanked by a 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG on one side, and a 2001 Lotus Esprit Turbo on the other, it was our little Speedsters that made people stop. And here’s what I remember most – the expression on virtually every face was a smile. I remember one conversation in particular with a lady who came by (smiling) three times. She said she couldn’t understand what it was about the design of the Speedster that captivated her so. As we talked, I discovered that she bred Greyhounds for a living. We concluded that what she loved so much was something I’ve also felt for a long time – that the simplicity and flowing lines of the Speedster are not only designed for lightweight effortless speed. They’re also captivating, delightful and just…make you smile.
